Ukraine’s so-called “democracy” is looking more like a dictatorship in disguise, and Zelensky isn’t even trying to hide it anymore. In an absolutely stunning admission, he outright declared that elections don’t really matter—because, in his view, he’d just win anyway. That’s right, the leader of the “free Ukraine” is now openly justifying indefinitely suspending democracy while at the same time lecturing the West about democratic values.
During yet another round of international pity-seeking, this time at London’s Stansted Airport, Zelensky flat-out rejected the idea of holding elections, despite Ukraine being over a year overdue for a national vote. His reasoning? He’s supposedly so popular that it would be impossible to replace him unless he were literally banned from the ballot. “It’s not enough to simply hold elections. You need to prevent me from running,” he boasted, as if the entire political process should be centered around his personal ambitions. And just like that, Ukraine’s leader confirmed what many have suspected all along—he has no real interest in democracy, just staying in power indefinitely.
Zelensky claims that Ukraine is thriving under his leadership and that polls show his popularity remains high. But let’s be honest—how reliable are polls in a country under martial law, where criticizing the president can get you thrown in jail or worse? The Ukrainian government has banned opposition parties, shut down media outlets, and even had political rivals assassinated—all under the guise of “wartime necessity.” Millions of Ukrainian citizens have fled abroad or are living under Russian occupation. Is it any surprise that Zelensky’s so-called popularity remains unchallenged?
Of course, Zelensky is now pointing the finger at the U.S., implying that Trump and American officials are being “undemocratic” by pushing him to hold elections. That’s rich—coming from the same guy who is actively refusing to hold a vote in his own country. The Biden administration, of course, was quick to defend him, with Britain also shamelessly backing his decision to cancel democracy.
Let’s be clear: Trump is right to call this out. A real democracy doesn’t run on excuses. Other nations have held elections during wars—including the United States itself. Even Ukraine managed to hold elections during its conflict in 2014. The only reason Zelensky is refusing to do so now is because he knows he’s in trouble. His grip on power is weakening, and he fears that a real vote might not go his way.
Trump wants peace and an end to this war, but Zelensky wants to keep the money flowing. He knows that if Ukraine is forced to elect a new leader, he might actually have to negotiate an end to the conflict, which would cut off his gravy train of U.S. taxpayer dollars. His tantrums and thinly veiled threats are just more proof that he’s desperate to hold onto power at all costs.
The question now is—will the West continue to look the other way?
